Services recently were held in Syracuse, NY, for Herbert T. Williams, associate professor of African-American studies and museum studies at Syracuse University and founder-director of the city's Community Folk Art Gallery.
Williams, 63, succumbed to prostate cancer at his home in the city.
As a new faculty member at Syracuse University, he opened the Community Folk Art Gallery in 1972 "to give previously unrecognized Third-World artists a place to exhibit and a place where their works may be sold at prices which neighborhood people can afford," Williams said.
