The biggest news of the century in the legal profession is also big news to accountants: After 20 years of contentious debate and tortuous study, the American Bar Association seems poised to allow lawyers to operate outside of traditional law firms. If approved by the Bar Association's ruling House of Delegates, perhaps as early as August, lawyers would be allowed fee-splitting arrangements with non-lawyers.
The move is tantamount to CPAs embracing non-CPA ownership, and no less divisive or far-reaching. It opens the door for legal services to be delivered by all sorts of businesses, most likely bankers, brokers and insurers, at first - but, especially, ...
