The likely bottoming out of Asian economies this year should not gloss over regional problems such as widespread poverty, the gender gap, indigenous disputes and food shortages, according to the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
Mr Tadao Chino (pictured), ushered in as president of the ADB early this year, said a comprehensive approach, including financial aid, was required to address Asia's problems.
"At the same time, financial assistance should be used increasingly to encourage policy and institutional reforms in order to leverage private-sector development and investments, to reduce poverty and to protect the environment," he said.
