OF ALL modern revolutions, Iran's was the most extraordinary. Not in that it happened: by 1979, with the shah's regime crumbling, violent change had become inevitable. What was astonishing, to most of the revolutionaries themselves, as well as to the outside world, was that the revolution swept away secular rule and the laws of men, replacing them with clerical rule and the laws of God.
