As a substance-abuse researcher, Dr. Harrison Pope of McLean Hospital stumbled upon a disturbing trend: "I interviewed hundreds of weightlifters who were using steroids, and I kept encountering men who were hugely muscular who thought they were small and scrawny."
Like victims of a reverse anorexia, these men would look in the mirror and scarcely see the rippling biceps and deltoids the rest of the world couldn't miss. And so they continued to work out obsessively, sometimes compromising their jobs, their relationships and their hobbies to become as muscular as they believed they should be.
