The aim to understand the role of language in Karl Jaspers's thought is an ambitious undertaking. Jaspers warned about treating his work as a source of what he called 'asthetischer Genuss' (Philosophie, p. xxii). In Jaspers's view, to accept poetic values was sheer folly. He thought that too much emphasis on the metaphorical diverts the mind from the discipline of thinking.
