This second volume in a projected four-volume history of the Jews in Germany easily matches the high standards set by its predecessor. The three authors present an account that is both complex and highly readable. They deal with a period which brought about a profound and permanent transformation both in the nature of the Jewish communities in Germany and in their relations with German society. The account they give of it is rich in detail and finely nuanced in its argument.
