Ben Green spent his first Christmas Night in 1951, as he would for years to come, tucked into bed at his grandparents' home in Cortez, Fla., on Sarasota Bay.
His parents, Clyde and Mary Fulford Green, brought 10-month-old Ben and his older sister Catherine home for Christmas from Wichita, Kan., where Clyde was serving in the Air Force.
On the same night, 170 miles away in Mims, on Florida's east coast, Harriet and Harry Moore also retired to bed in their small rural bungalow, as they had for many Christmases past.
