Since the mid-'80s, a Lucite-encased reproduction of the Pulitzer Prize Gold Medal for Public Service has stood near my desk.

I pick it up and look at it, reflect on the people at the paper who did the investigative work, and appreciate their generosity -- and that of the Denver Post, for sharing the joy of winning with every person who worked at the newspaper. We each got the four-inch plastic keepsake, and the party at one of Denver's finest hotels is unforgettable despite the haze of champagne and cigar smoke through which I floated that evening.

We also got a renewed sense of pride in working for the Post.
