The discovery of luggage on a beach off Gay Head, on Martha's Vineyard, Mass., provided the first concrete, and chilling, evidence that John F. Kennedy Jr.'s airplane had crashed nearby in the sea. A Boston TV station interviewed a woman who described how she and friends had spotted the luggage, that it was brought ashore, and that it belonged to Lauren Bessette, the sister of Kennedy's wife, Carolyn, who was also aboard the plane.
That finding marked the beginning of the end of a massive Coast Guard and Air Force search that started early Saturday morning after the airplane did not arrive as scheduled for a wedding rehearsal dinner Friday night.
