EARLY in 1957 everything seemed to be going well for Orson Welles. He was directing and acting in a new thriller for producer Albert Zugsmith at Universal starring the popular new star Charlton Heston. In marked contrast to his unhappy departure for Europe eight years earlier following the commercial failure of Lady from Shanghai and Macbeth, the studio bosses were happy, the film was on schedule and there was talk of a three- or four-picture deal. It seemed Hollywood's prodigal boy genius had returned having acquired at forty-three maturity and discretion in Europe (not to mention the Palme d'Or at Cannes for his Othello).
