On June 17, EU Transport Ministers managed to work out a political agreement on the gradual introduction of a European satellite navigation system. Christened GALILEO, this project - presented by the Commission on February 10 (COM(1999)54) - aims to introduce the European Union to the global satellite navigation market. Ministers adopted a Resolution calling on the Commission to submit mandates to the Council on the terms for negotiations with both the United States and Russia before the Summer recess.
