Since 1971, the year in which a separate Advisory Committee on Procurement and Contracts was set up for the Joint Research Centre, research and technological development activities have expanded considerably, and the Joint Research Centre is no longer the only European Commission Directorate-General which plays an active part in these activities. Many other Directorates-General are currently involved in such activities, particularly via the implementation of the EU Framework R&D Programmes, with the result that they now conclude more scientific contracts than the Joint Research Centre.
