Christine Birkle is a hands-on designer. As a felt specialist, she can't avoid it -- hand-washing, boiling, pressing and shaping merino wool and cotton and silk gauze into more felt objects than one might think possible.
At her Hut Up boutique and showroom in the recently restored Heckmannhofe courtyard complex in Berlin, Birkle's felt work is on display. And in the studios upstairs, the 34-year-old designer and her five assistants handcraft the bags, hats, scarves, dresses, tops, hair ornaments, scuffs and home accessories that carry the Hut Up label.
