Until recently, the Grand Central District suffered from a major image problem: very establishment and decidedly un-hip. The area lacked the chic boutiques of SoHo and the trendy restaurants of the Flatiron/Union square neighborhood.
A younger generation of New Yorkers perceived the neighborhood as stodgy, typified by middle-aged men in Brooks Brothers suits running to catch the 5:25 to Darien. After 6 p.m., the area cleared out. Moreover, retailing, the true barometer of what's happening, had a particularly masculine slant, with stores targeting women noticeably absent from the mix.
