A Senate Democrat who voted with Republicans for a $792 billion tax cut says President Clinton should be prepared to get behind a $500 billion compromise.
Sen. Robert G. Torricelli, chairman of the Democratic Senate Campaign Committee, said, "I would caution the president that if the Republicans are prepared at some point to return with a $500 billion tax cut that is sufficiently progressive . . . a very large, moderate, bipartisan coalition is likely to form" behind it.
"I would urge the administration to be part of that effort," the New Jersey Democrat said on CNN's "Evans, Novak, Hunt & Shields."
