When Huhtamaki Oyj sweetened its offer for Van Leer NV to $1 billion, the Dutch firm finally relented.
The result: Huhtamaki Van Leer, a global packaging powerhouse with sales of 2.8 billion euros ($3 billion).
Espoo, Finland-based Huhtamaki beat four other bidders in the contest for Amstelveen, Netherlands-based Van Leer.
Huhtamaki Van Leer, to be based in Espoo, will be the world's eighth biggest packaging producer, as measured by sales. It will be a global leader in plastic cups and tubs and molded fiber products, and maintain Van Leer's top slot in steel drums and industrial closures.
