Pianist and bandleader Luis Russell was born this day in 1902 in Careening Cay, Panama. In the 1930s, he led a hot band in Harlem's Saratoga Club. Sidemen included Henry ``Red'' Allen, Paul Barbarin and Albert Nicholas...and a decade later...young drummer Roy Haynes.
Dixieland trombonist Vic Dickenson was born this day in 1906 in Xenia, Ohio. He was one of the first trombonists to bring humorous techniques to the slide horn. He died in 1984.
