Aug. 10 -- Stamps have been available by phone, fax and vending machine. And now customers can buy stamps online and print them on their home computers.

PC Postage, which became available nationwide Monday, can be ordered online 24 hours a day, seven days a week through companies that charge a fee for the service. Customers then can print the bar codes directly onto envelopes or onto mailing labels.

"We try to stay futuristic and are thinking about our customers and the way they shop," said McKinney Boyd, a spokesman with the U.S. Postal Service. "Purchasing stamps online can be another option."
