Aug. 6 -- Port Marketing Manager Carlos Buqueras remembers simpler days.

When Latin American trade was booming in the early and mid '90s, it was no tough task to get shipping lines to add routes and extra vessels in South Florida, the prime U.S. gateway to the Americas.

In those days, the challenge for Buqueras was to persuade lines to expand into his base at Port Everglades, then a minor seaport compared to the giant Port of Miami.
