Aug. 10 -- Susan Goldberg, a deputy managing editor at USA Today and a former Mercury News editor, will become the managing editor of the Mercury News.
Goldberg, 39, who was selected after a nationwide search, will serve as second in command of the newsroom, handling the day-to-day operations. She fills the job left vacant by David Yarnold, who was appointed executive editor in April.
Yarnold told the staff Monday that he hired Goldberg because of "her passion for serious storytelling and her infectious energy."
