The 1998 competition for the fourth annual Gerald D. Nash History Journal Prize was quite spirited and exceedingly close so far as the overall quality of the submissions was concerned. Fourteen journals were submitted, which necessitated a considerable amount of work for the judges, but it was welcome labor. The attendant soul searching and agony over having to make tough, often seemingly impossible distinctions and judgments was less welcome. Despite the addition of runner-up prizes, the judges are unanimous in their opinion that lamentably too many deserving journals and editorial staffs have again gone unrewarded in this competition.
