Aug. 13 -- PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Rhode Island, which a decade ago was paying the federal government more in taxes than it got back in aid and services, now makes a profit on every dollar it sends to Uncle Sam, according to a new study.
For each tax dollar Rhode Island paid in 1998, it got back $1.15 in federal spending, says the analysis by the Tax Foundation, a conservative think tank based in Washington, D.C. As deals go, it's the 21st best in the nation.
In 1988 Rhode Island got back 96 cents for every dollar it paid in federal taxes and ranked 33rd in the nation, says the study. That made the state a ...
