DM&E is preparing to upgrade for heavy-haul traffic and construct a new line into the Wyoming coal fields over one of railroading's most difficult subgrades.
The Chicago & North Western used to bring in an awful lot of revenue hauling bentonite clay from western South Dakota and eastern Wyoming. Unfortunately, that same underlying adsorbing clay and other equally challenging soil materials caused terrific drainage problems all along the way.
Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern took over a long stretch of C&NW across South Dakota and Minnesota in 1986. Ten years later, Union Pacific sold DM&E the 200-mile Colony Line that serves the bentonite mines.
