In the preface the editors state their goal as to 'summarize existing knowledge rather than to present the results of original research or to pioneer innovative approaches to the study of Native American history' (p. xiii), for the time span extending from prehistory to the late nineteenth century. They accomplish this by presenting eight essays, each on a different theme or chronological period, all written by prominent scholars, none of whom is Native.
