The American Film Institute recently announced a round of grant awards to various film archives for film preservation, and the selection this time was particularly interesting.
The films that will benefit include the kind you'd pretty much expect as well as some surprises that highlight not just the imaginative responses of the grant-givers but also underline the cinema's unique standing as an art form and technology.
For example, the Louis Wolfson II Media History Center was awarded $17,650 to preserve films that document Florida culture from the 1920s through 1950s. And while some of these films presumably are professional documentaries, 11 of them are ...
