LOCATION
The Quiruvilca District is located 80 km east of Trujillo at the head of the Moche River Valley. The elevations of the various workings in the district vary between 3,800 and 4,000 meters. The many workings are collectively known as the Quiruvilca mine, also occasionally called the Asarco mine (for the parent mining company) or the La Libertad mine. Quiruvilca means "sacred tooth" in Quechua. The term refers to a prominently exposed volcanic neck several kilometers to the northeast (Bartos, 1987a).
