Aug. 21 -- NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. -- Herbert P. Hawkins, a California real estate brokerage pioneer, died Wednesday at age 76, after a yearlong battle with cancer.
Hawkins, of Newport Beach, founded Temple City-based Herbert Hawkins Realtors in 1946, one of the first multi-office brokerages in the San Gabriel Valley.
"He taught me to work hard and concentrate on doing a good job, not on making a lot of money," said Preston Hawkins, who took over after his father's retirement in 1980 and now runs a real estate law firm in Arcadia.
