17 Blacks command sophisticated ships

ONLY two generations ago, in 1961, Lieutenant Commander Samuel L. Gravely Jr. became the first Black to assume command of a regular U.S. Navy warship. Since then, Black admirals, including Gravely, who later became the first Black admiral, have commanded whole fleets of ships, and today, 38 years later; at least 17 Blacks, including one woman, command multimillion-dollar Navy vessels.
