Next Sunday's Pacific Classic is looking more and more like the finale of "NTRA Leftovers on FOX" than the captivating climax of "NTRA Champions on FOX" that the National Thoroughbred Racing Association had once envisioned for Del Mar's marquee race.
The $1 million race, already seriously depleted by the recent injuries of thoroughbred stars Real Quiet and Victory Gallop, was dealt another serious blow yesterday when likely favorite Mazel Trick broke down during a morning gallop at the oceanside track.
Mazel Trick wasn't exactly a household name, but the Bobby Frankel-trained colt had shown tremendous potential during a four-race winning streak.
