Aug. 28 -- Salinas Valley agriculture officials are bracing for an attack by South American red fire ants.
The ants already are wreaking havoc in the southeastern United States and have become entrenched in parts of Southern California and are threatening the Central Valley.
Ranchers in southern Monterey County would face more of a problem because these ants prefer warmer weather. The red fire ants are more of a problem in cattle-raising areas, such as South County, because vegetable crop cultivation methods rip up the ground each season and regularly destroy fire ant nests, said Brad Oliver, staff biologist ...
