Ceramic coatings for Hall-Heroult cell cathodes are under development by researchers at Advanced Refractory Technologies Inc (ART) of Buffalo, New York, USA.
The project is in support of a US Department of Energy (DoE) programme, awarded to Reynolds Metals Co, called Wettable Ceramic-based Drained Cathode Technology for Aluminum Electrolysis Cells. Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corp is also taking part in the research. The project will focus on developing and evaluating ceramic-based materials and the necessary engineering packages to retrofit existing aluminium reduction cells as a means to improve their performance.
