Romania has long been an important tourist destination, but under the communist system there was little scope for private enterprise. The rural areas were generally neglected and provision in the mountains was largely restricted to a few key resorts (i.e. Poiana Brasov and Sinaia) and chains of chalets, most prominent in the Bucegi and Fagaras Mountains (Surd, 1988).
