Malaysian export tax

A new, higher rate of export tax on Malaysian timber products, delayed since it was first announced in May, is to be imposed in August. The increase from RM1.36 to RM10/m3 was urged by the Malaysian Timber Industry Board, which will be the main beneficiary. It will affect timber products, particleboard and, subject to talks with producers, possibly MDF as well.

CSR/Amatek gets OK

The A$400m merger of CSR and Amatek's wood based panels businesses (WBPI June/July, p4) is reported to have received informal approval by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.
