Long Ashton has a long tradition of agricultural research. But by the middle of the next decade it could be history.
In 1903, a group of West Country apple growers dug deep into their own pockets to set up an experimental cider farm near Long Ashton, Somerset. They called it National Fruit and Cider Institute and quickly established a reputation to go with the name. Nine years later the institute was absorbed into the nearby University of Bristol as the Department of Agricultural Sciences - a distinction it still holds.
