ACF puts Queensland under water pressure
ACF's campaign against subsidised dam construction in Queensland has achieved a major win through the National Competition Council.
Under the nationally agreed Water Resources Policy of 1994, no new dams or weirs can be constructed unless they are both `economically viable and ecologically sustainable'. However, since that time, some schemes in Queensland have progressed with million-dollar government subsidies, benefiting cotton and sugar growers at the expense of the environment.
