It seems the uproar surrounding Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita never ends. First published in 1955, the story of Humbert Humbert's obsession with a 12-year-old was deemed brilliant by some--obscene by others. France banned it, and it was years before the book appeared in the United States. The plot was toned down to make the first film version in 1962; every major movie studio refused to release a 1997 rendition, which later aired on cable.
