Theoretically, resource-based industries will survive the current monetary turbulence, which has sent the rupiah nose-diving against the US dollar, more so in the case of resource-based industries that are export-oriented. However, it seems that the plywood industry has to be singled out from such an optimistic outlook. Apparently, it has been increasingly difficult for this industry to continue growing. Well into the second semester of 1997, the absorbing power of the international market for plywood dropped sharply while the performance of Indonesian plywood producers weakened as a result of the precarious economic condition.
