Sep. 10 -- The United States and China agreed yesterday to resume talks that could result in Beijing's admission into the World Trade Organization.

The agreement came following a meeting between U.S. Trade Representative Charlene Barshefsky and Chinese Foreign Trade Minister Shi Guangsheng.

"The discussion underscored the desire to re-engage in substantive discussions," Mrs. Barshefsky told reporters after the three-hour meeting with her Chinese counterpart on the eve of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in New Zealand. "That in itself is progress."
