A person's mode of coping is thought to be an important intervening variable involved in the detrimental effects of stress (Billings & Moos, 1981; Lazarus & Folkman, 1984). Studies of coping have examined the distinction between problem-focused coping, which involves using organized problem solving efforts directed at the source of the stress, and emotion-focused coping, which merely reduces or manages the associated mental distress without addressing the problem itself (Lazarus & Folkman, 1984).
