The United States yesterday suspended all ties with Indonesia's military and issued a presidential ultimatum demanding that Jakarta allow international peacekeepers to restore order in East Timor if it cannot do so itself.
The suspension of military ties came days after Indonesia's military chief had delivered assurances he would restore order, raising questions as to who really controls the army.
"If Indonesia does not end the violence, it must invite - it must invite - the international community to assist in restoring security," President Clinton told reporters at the White House yesterday.
