SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. _ Susan Duong's parents never spoke about the war that ripped them out of their homeland. They left in 1975 and settled here, where she was born and raised. She's never been to Vietnam.
Her parents did return this year, and they brought back pictures of their country as it is today, a blend of Asian culture and Western influences, with modern, lively cities far removed from the war's jungle battlegrounds.
So this summer, when the University of Rhode Island issued a call for photos of life after the Vietnam War, Duong, 23, a graduate student in microbiology, offered some of her parents' snapshots.
