About that $1.35 million Terry McAuliffe provided to enable Bill and Hillary Clinton to buy a home in a much-moneyed, much-manicured little town outside New York City - the consensus has it that the transaction is distinctly aromatic. After all, a debt-ridden president has allowed himself to become indebted to a private citizen. And what a private citizen. Having spearheaded the Clintons' legal defense fund, the presidential library, the 1996 Clinton-Gore presidential campaign (more on that below), and lately the first lady's likely Senate campaign, Mr. McAuliffe has now, with this personal loan, transformed himself into something close to a presidential piggy bank.
