The third and fourth hitters in the Red Sox batting order are an inverted recreation of Rambling Wreck history.
When Jason Varitek and Nomar Garciaparra were teammates at Georgia Tech University earlier in the decade, they batted in harmony in the meat of the batting order. But back then, Varitek was the clean-up hitter and Garciaparra batted third when he wasn't the leadoff man.
Red Sox manager Jimy Williams is not a student of Georgia Tech baseball history, but he has taken a page of out coach Jim Morris' playbook by reconnecting his catcher and shortstop in the lineup's production spots.
The only difference now is the order in which they hit. ...
