With the past three years of very dry summers, we have been experimenting with different methods to conserve moisture in our garden. In some of our reading we found mentioned the use of burying unglazed pots. We modified this historical method to fit our trial test and the materials we had available to us.
We used unglazed flower pots with eight-inch diameters, and dug a hole 24 inches across by 12 inches deep. Each pot was then buried to its rim in the middle of the hole. Seeds or seedlings (we used the method for summer squash, pumpkins, cucumbers, and a cut-and-come again heirloom lettuce that did well for us from spring until fall) were planted around the ...
