We have a flock of about 40 mixed Rhode Island Reds and Aracaunars, who are fed a grain mix (rolled oats, corn, milo) and a laying mash (bran, linseed meal, salt, eggshells, and milk or water). Every day they spend the afternoon loose and there is a lot of green matter on their range. They lay fairly well and appear to be very healthy.
Several months ago one of the hens began showing a large protuberance underneath her breastbone which had some quite viscous fluid in it; when one pressed on the blister it stayed indented for some time.
