It seems that I am among the few art educators who paid attention to the results of the recent National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) in visual art (NCES 1998). I cannot take full credit for percipience and wisdom, however. In spring 1977, Kenneth Marantz, then chair of the Department of Art Education, organized a graduate seminar at Ohio State on issues in art education with a range of speakers, including a representative from the Education Commission of the States, which was managing NAEP.
