In ancient Maya culture there was no linguistic distinction between the words for painting, drawing, and writing. Nowhere is this more beautifully revealed than in the painted pottery of the Classic Maya Period, which seamlessly combines all three artistic pursuits. An exhibition that explores this art form is on view at the George R. Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art in Toronto, from September 9 to January 2, 2000. Some 150 objects comprise the show, which is entitled Maya Universe: Classic Maya Art, Patronage and Culture A.D. 250-850 and is funded by Investors Group.
