The world's newest currency has had a bumpy ride in the first half of 1999. Relative to the dollar, the euro has depreciated by around 10% since its debut in January at an exchange rate of 1.19. At its low point in early July, the euro was near parity against the dollar. It's plunge has been a severe embarrassment for euro-zone governments and central banks. However, Europeans still hope that the euro may soon complement the greenback as an international reserve currency and that commodities like crude oil and softs may be priced in euros instead of dollars in coming years.
