Debswana is Botswana's diamond mining company, owned in equal share by the government and De Beers, operating the Orapa, Letlhakane and Jwaneng mines in Botswana. The three mines have contributed enormously to the economic growth of the country, not only in forex and government revenue terms but also through the workings of the multiplier effect as a result of the operation of mines and towns in remote areas.
The company was formed in 1969 to develop the Orapa mine, discovered by De Beers geologists two years previously after a 12-year search. Operations began in 1971.
